Actually this is a supported behavior with the Ceres database in the 1.1
branch (bleeding edge) but as Nick points out, it simply won't work with
whisper.
Another approach you could take would be to write a new rendering
function that alters the data returned by whisper and pads it with Nones
appropriately.
