It depends entirely on your application. This is why many people choose to run a statsd server. Not only does it perform aggregation and gives you a lot of value-added statistical metrics, but the client libraries support non-blocking udp submissions.
If your apps are submitting directly to Carbon, they're subject to blocking behavior and timeouts if your Carbon listener(s) stop accepting for some reason.
