An important issue is that the Mac binaries for wxPython assume an independent MacPython installation rather than an Apple system installation. This is changing, I think. I'll check to see what the status is now.

It's just a user preference.  Some prefer to have the most recent
python and wxpython and other modules.  The system python fits the
minimum requirements for GRASS (so far).

In that case, I really think that the first step is to get everything
working when only one version of Python is installed.

Anyone compiling from source when more than one version of a package
is installed assumes responsibility for ensuring that they don't end
up mixing versions.
