fwiw, a new driver for GDAL should to be be license-compatible with
GDAL, ie donated MIT/X, not reused GPL code. ISTR that GRASS`s fmt
is not so far from ERDAS`s? (see old RT bug tracker ticket)
maybe a place to start.
