as far as the debian grass package goes, perhaps we could have
a main "grass" package, which depended on "grass-base" and
"grass-gui" packages. The -base package wouldn't depend on the
-gui package, so folks who didn't want the GUI deps could avoid it.
also "apt-get install grass" would still install what people
expect: base+gui.
not sure if -base or -core is preferred, but whichever..
