The r.sun command has a -s option to incorporate the shadowing effect of
terrain on the calculations. Request that this be made the default. I
understand that there are circumstances where one would not want the
terrain shadowing to be used, but it seems that incorporating terrain
shadowing as the default would give the more commonly desired outcome.
