Current situation that wxgui fails with cryptic error is also not a solution. If you consider compatibility with 2.9 to not easy solvable, is it possible to enforce wxpython <2.9 then? Or make it fail with "2.8 required" error message?
With r54916 and r51052 at least wxgui came up and I was able to display a map. No serious testing tough as I just wanted to see if #1893 is fixed.
