Oops. You're right. 

It does look like a problem I've also seen for Mac's that have been set to a 
non-English language. It also has to do with some hard coding and not quite 
right error traps in trying to determine how GRASS displays text. I tried to 
track this down a year ago and thought it had gone away. It is one of the 
reasons, I've included nls/gettext support in my binaries. 

The Mac is pretty cavalier about setting the multiple environmental variables 
available in Unix for the language. I can't remember now for sure whether it is 
GRASS trying to set a default for an unset environmental variable or it is 
already in the variable from the Mac, but it gets set to an incorrect value. At 
the worst, GRASS should just ignore it and go ahead with English. But the 
Python code throws an error and shuts down the GUI instead. 

I do NOT recommend installing a 3rd party Python. We've had lots of problems 
with this, and the association between wxPython and Python. Some of it may be 
improved because I (and William) now bundle wxPython with GRASS, but I would 
not do it unless there is a very good reason to do so.
