I can start to answer my own question. It works fine with GRASS 7.0.1 but is broken on 7.1 with the following build information
GRASS 7.1.svn (nc_spm_08_grass7):~ > g.version -g version=7.1.svn date=2015 revision=65919M build_date=2015-08-12 build_platform=x86_64-apple-darwin14.4.0 Perhaps it has been fixed now?
