Maybe un-related, but I get a lot of

(main.py:2770): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_box_gadget_distribute: assertion
'size >= 0' failed in GtkCheckButton
}}}
in the terminal both when opening a monitor and using "Add text layer".
