Hi, Having signed up as co-/backup mentor too, I very much support Helenas suggestion: "As a backup mentor I would vote for all funds going to the main mentor or to cover some collaborative development activity (in the past it would have been e.g. travel to code sprint)."
Getting paid for mentoring would probably cause more administrative overhead for me than justified... Also, using the funds as an incentive for further participation of the students after GSoC (e.g. travel funds to Community sprints once in person again) could be a nice way of using the money... Unless, main mentors have other ideas... Also, for those mentors who can accept payment, that is legit compensation to accept, in my view...
