I have installed the gstat packages in R as Markus advised. But this did not install the package spgrass. An attempt to do this manually failed with an error message about my libgdal.so library. It had the correct path but was unable to open the library which did exist and had proper permissions! I presume I have a problem in my gdal build, which I will work on! It does not seem to be necessary for me to build gstat as a linux library - it is the gstat library within R that is used by these kriging programs. And the updated v.autokrige.py (39090 in the svn) overcomes the GRASS_VERBOSE access error. Both v.krige.py and v.autokrige.py require the spgrass package installed within R so neither of them work for me at present, but I should be able to resolve this once I install package spgrass in R by fixing my libgdal problems.
