Mark, I don't know.
It is my understanding that r.drain overcomes pits/sinks in a DEM by traversing lowest locations until goes off map.
I did not use r.drain, but r.watershed. The last time I ran this sequence -- before correcting the reprojection and resolution -- there were no spurious cells.
