I had the same problem with osgeo4w.
Then I installed the RC6 with the installer
(http://grass.osgeo.org/grass64/binary/mswindows/native/), after that both
distributions worked very well.
I have no idea what it is, but it worked.
BTW, RC6 is very stable.
