I would second this Nikos - perhaps such instructions could also be emailed as 
a 
welcome note when a new user joins the discussion group? As a noob it is 
sometimes difficult to know what information to include in requests for help 
(and also how to get this info out of GRASS)

Get most of the above questions answered via "g.version -br". Maybe the 
"g.version" module could be enhanced to _also_ return the operating system?

As a side-note: 

new user's ask naturally for support and very frequently the same questions 
(like above) are asked from experienced user's to better nail down a potential 
problem. Maybe we could use a wiki-page with standard steps like:

  1. provide information about grass version, build, etc (use "g.version -br" 
for example)
  2. for raster related processing, provide the region size ("g.region -p")
  3. etc.
