really, if you want a high quality plot in GRASS 6 (for printing) you will want to use ps.map, or ps.output (from addons). Then paste in the EPS file, tweak with Inkscape or Adb. Illustrator, ... for a large graphic on a poster or projector presentations the d.* display outputs can be ok, but as you discovered this is primarily designed for on-screen display so many things like d.barscale, d.rast.arrow, and d.grid are hardcoded with lines as one pixel wide.
