There seems to be some GDAL confusion in the Ubuntu built, the same was reported on the Italian GRASS list. It was suggestied to check the dependencies: dpkg -s grass or dpkg -s grass-core > 2.) When viewing attributes of a layer, I can identify it with the > query-tool, but get an empty table when selecting "show attribute data".
