the best thing to get any information about srs of your data is using
ogrinfo:

ogrinfo yourGISdata

compare then the ogrinfo output with the srs of your location

Helmut,

The projection information I see looks acceptable to grass:

Layer SRS WKT:
PROJCS["WGS 84 / Pseudo-Mercator",
    GEOGCS["WGS 84",
        DATUM["WGS_1984",
            SPHEROID["WGS 84",6378137,298.257223563,
                AUTHORITY["EPSG","7030"]],
            AUTHORITY["EPSG","6326"]],
        PRIMEM["Greenwich",0,
            AUTHORITY["EPSG","8901"]],
        UNIT["degree",0.0174532925199433,
            AUTHORITY["EPSG","9122"]],
        AUTHORITY["EPSG","4326"]],
    PROJECTION["Mercator_1SP"],
    PARAMETER["central_meridian",0],
    PARAMETER["scale_factor",1],
    PARAMETER["false_easting",0],
    PARAMETER["false_northing",0],
    UNIT["metre",1,
        AUTHORITY["EPSG","9001"]],
    AXIS["X",EAST],
    AXIS["Y",NORTH],
    EXTENSION["PROJ4","+proj=merc +a=6378137 +b=6378137 +lat_ts=0.0 +lon_0=0.0
+x_0=0.0 +y_0=0 +k=1.0 +units=m +nadgrids=@null +wktext +no_defs"],
    AUTHORITY["EPSG","3857"]]

I created a new location using EPSG 3857 but when I tried to import the
data using v.in.ogr from the GUI this results:

(Mon Oct 30 13:46:30 2017) v.in.ogr input=/home/rshepard/data/species/fish/RedbandTrout_201201_v931.gdb layer=FishD_RedbandTrout_September2012 output=redband_trout2012
WARNING: Updating spatial reference with embedded proj4 definition
WARNING: Datum <unknown> not recognised by GRASS and no parameters found
(Mon Oct 30 13:46:31 2017) Command finished (0 sec)

Why is WGS_1984 not recognized by grass7.3.svn? Have I used the incorrect
EPSG code? And why doesn't grass find the correct datum when I let it create
a new location?

Thanks,

Rich
