I have a 242M geotiff file, 45122f8.tif, which r.in.gdal imported as three

has the same display (geotiff.png attached).

This is most probably an RGB color image that GRASS has split into three color bands.

r.info shows the same data for each of the three created files, but no
categories, but with 688235940 cells (each 1.5' resolution ). That output
file is also attached.

I don't see from the output that each band has the same data. You'd have to run r.univar on each band to get the statistics (mean, etc)

What might I have done incorrectly that the results do not cover the entire
1:24000 quadrangle map?

Can you view the original tif in a graphics program (or QGIS) to see what's there?
