thanks rchitect

it was actually ted ngai's file that I started with. I really like the
end of result but the specifics of his grid weren't ideal - one set of
diamonds were offset to the interior while the other remains at the ir
full dimension - I am trying to get the offset to happen in both
directions. I went in and tried mucking about but his file has alot of
copying and duplication with wires going all over the place. I need to
learn how to manage my gh data but I tried repeatedly to understand
what and why he was doing what he was doing - in the end i got
frustrated and started from scratch.

One thing that I can't quite understand is why one can't use the
diagonals in the other example you mentioned - typically like ngai's
example, a second set of points are created from the first. I know
that the lines which are 'piped' in the first example you mentioned
will not always cross which I suppose might pose problems if you need
the centre point as ngai repeatedly uses. I'm just trying to do what
ngai's surfaces do but in reverse - have I want strips of surface
between each diamond ending at an octagon like shape that connects the
four strips at each intersection...
