One thing that OLPC spent a lot of time on was the Human Interface Guidelines. Some things have slipped, Sugar is moving away from integer activity numbers & only using verbs to describe activities, but on the whole it's a very good read. http://wiki.laptop.org/go/OLPC_Human_Interface_Guidelines
