The FWTools for GNU Linux includes ECW support too. No need to switch to Windows. You can install FWTools in a custom location of your preference (I use $HOME/bin/FWTools). It should not interfere with system-wide instalation of PROJ, GDAL, MapServer et. all. Works for me.
