I expectged it to be problematic. What I will do: install grass 5.4.2 as
well and import to a format which can be read from both.

the e00's pre-date arcMap, and apparently from what I have experienced,
even though the .e00 are ASCII interchange files, they are not the same
as an "ESRI ASCII Raster file" produced by ArcCatalog within ArcMap.
(arc/info workstation .e00 ascii file <> arcMap .txt ascii file)
I cant see how to import a raster .e00 file directly. I would be
grateful to hear from someone how to do this. I checked the GDAL page
also, but could not find the answer.
what will work is this:
Use ArcCatalog (or arc/info workstation) to import the .e00 file to an
ESRI GRID.
Use ArcToolBox, under "Conversion Tools", then "From Raster", then
"Raster to ASCII" dialog.
Input the raster, Input the output ASCII raster file in the dialog box.
This will output a <outfile>.txt file.
this ASCII text file can be imported using the r.in.arc
(File-->Import-->Raster Map-->ESRI Arc/Info ASCII grid)
