Hi Phil,

the files in /var/log/elasticsearch/ are pretty much literally the log 
messages of the Elasticsearch node running on that system. You're most 
likely looking for /var/lib/elasticsearch/.

The configuration file of Elasticsearch can usually be found at 
/etc/elasticsearch/elasticsearch.yml or in the config/ subdirectory of the 
directory Elasticsearch has been installed in. Please refer 
to
