After some additional testing I located the actual problem.

I tried to load GROK patterns on Windows machine. Naturally, the text file 
was created with CR+LF characters as line ending markers.  Using Notepad++ 
I performed "EOL Conversion" to Linux format (LF).  The patterns file 
loaded nicely immediately after that!

Clearly, this is a bug, I will report it.
