Ideally, yes. But I don't think this is a regression. If you can confirm that this script works on some earlier version, but not on 0.9.4, then this is a regression bug that needs to be fixed. But otherwise it's a request for enhancement which is lower priority.
(I've tried, and failed, to make things like this work. I don't know what the return value from open tab is worth besides being able to _assign_, not read, the location. Like any cross-origin window reference.)
