In connection with International year of Mountains and International Year of
Ecotourism celebrated by United Nations, the Ecotourism Society Pakistan (ESP)
has announced International Life Time Achievement Award which has gone to one
of the most veterans working in the field of Mountains and sustainable mountain
development. Mr. Marjan Kersic from Slovenia (His services are far older than
newly born Slovenia itself ). He was a member of the first Yugoslav Expedition
to Himalayas in 1960. He climbed Trisul III with Ante Mahkota and Ales Kunaver.
He attempted Trisul II with Ang Nima Sherpa but they did not reach the peak due
to a terrible storm. With his friend he wrote a book (NIGHTS AND STORMS)
describing the dramatic events of the climb and encounters with the local
people of the Trisul area and the Sherpas. After the expedition (which is
considered the basis for all later Slovenian Himalayan climbing successes) he
dedicated his creative work to a large opus of sculptures inspired by the
Himalayan cultures. He also held many lectures on the Himalayan mountains and
the cultural and natural heritage of the area all over the former Yugoslavia.
It may be mentioned that ESP has already announced International Ecotourism
Promotion Awards which have gone to Mr. Jeremy Garret, former Director The
International Ecotourism Society (TIES) United States and Mr. Antonis of
Ecoclub S.A Athens Greece.

This is issued with the approval of ESP Core Members
