Costa Rican Adventures wins Ecotourism Award for Student Travel thanks
to Green-Travel

Greetings,

Just a note to say thanks for posting the Eco-tourism award that Conde
Nast gives out every year. I saw it and filled out the rather tedious
form and we ended up winning the runner-up Ecotourism Operator award for
our group educational trips in sustainability and local culture.

This list works!

Sincerely,

Jay

Subject: Tourism Concern launches its Sun, Sand, Sea and SWEATSHOPS
campaign

TourismConcern

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

London, 11 October, 2004:

Tourism Concern launches its Sun, Sand, Sea and SWEATSHOPS campaign
fighting to stop abusive labour conditions within the tourism
industry, based on its groundbreaking research at five popular
tourism destinations.

While we relax in the sunshine, life is far from paradise for the
waiters, cooks, cleaners, porters, drivers, receptionists and other
staff who work so hard to make our holidays idyllic and carefree.

Working conditions in the tourism industry are notoriously
exploitative. The research undertaken by TourismConcern uncovered
widespread exploitative conditions in our holiday destinations.
Every hotel we researched is advertised in the holiday brochures of
the four major tour operators in the UK. These conditions violate
international legislation and keep workers in poverty.

"Foreign investment in tourism has weakened working conditions in my
country. They refuse to have trade unions but they pay badly and sack
those who complain."
Vicky Kanyoka, trade unionist, Tanzania

Tourism Concern's is asking the public to add their voice to the
growing pressure on tour operators to ensure that they are not part
of this abuse. They will be signing postcards addressed to the four
largest UK tour operators - Thomson, First Choice, Thomas Cook and
Airtours – letting them know that as holidaymakers, they will not
book with any tour operator that, directly or indirectly, exploit
people on their behalf.

The launch provides a unique opportunity to meet with people working
in the tourism industry from Egypt, Gambia and Tanzania who have
first-hand experience of issues such as:

· Poverty wages
· Long hours, unpaid overtime and stress
· Lack of secure contracts
· Poor training and few promotion opportunities for local people ·
Cost-cutting measures leading to redundancies and overwork ·
Over-dependency on tips

Available for interview in London this week are:

Ashraf el-Sayad from Egypt, who has worked on Nile cruise ships as
head chef for the last 20 years, and has in-depth knowledge of what
it's like behind the scenes (available 12 – 19 October)

Vicky Kanyoka from Tanzania, is head of the Conservation, Hotels,
Domestic and Allied Workers Union (CHODAWU) which is addressing the
consequences of poor working conditions in tourism and struggling to
negotiate legal and fair working conditions (10-16 October)

Marta Di Cesare, from Italy, is one of the project researchers and
covered working conditions in Cancun, Mexico and Nile cruises in
Egypt. She works as a tour guide and researcher for Associazione RAM –
an Italian NGO promoting fair trade and responsible tourism. She co-
authored "Provero Outgoing" which reports the findings of the
research by RAM and Tourism Concern (14-17 October)

Phoday Touray, from Gambia, who has worked for Gambia Tourism Concern
and has an inside knowledge of how tourism impacts on local tourism
workers (12 - 17 October)

Guyonne James, campaign manager at Tourism Concern, is also available
for interview. She offers an overview of the problem:

"International laws are being flouted everywhere within the tourism
industry. Tour operators are profiting while workers are struggling
to survive in unacceptable and illegal working conditions."

All the guests will be speaking at Tourism Concern's session

Meet the Workers
at the European Social Forum (ESF)
Friday 15 October 2004, 13.00-15.00hrs
Congress House, Great Russell Street, London

NOTES TO EDITORS:

Sun, Sand, Sea, and SWEATSHOPS is just one part of Tourism Concern's
campaigning for ethical and fairly-traded tourism. We work to bring
the benefits of tourism to local people. We believe that fairer
tourism is better for tourists and holidaymakers, and more just and
rewarding for local people. Tourism can be a powerful force for good,
but only if it's fair.

Research for this campaign was carried out in the popular tourism
destinations of: Cancun, Mexico; Egypt, Canary Islands, Dominican
Republic and Bali. A full report, "Labour standards, social
responsibility and tourism", is available from
http://www.tourismconcern.org.uk

Tourism Concern's other initiatives include:
- improving working conditions for trekking porters – over 40 UK
trekking companies have signed up to a code protecting porters rights
- co-ordinating a UK/Burma Tourism boycott
- halting a tourism development in Nungwi, Zanzibar that threatened
to evict thousands of people
- co-ordinating an international network on fair trade in tourism
- publishing The Good Alternative Travel Guide, the first guidebook
on community-run tourism
- working with UK tour operators and the UK government on corporate
social responsibility in tourism
- influencing UK government policy to ensure that tourism
destinations do not suffer unnecessarily as a result of FCO travel
advisories
