Chinese Environmental Activists Need Your Help!

The members of Zijin Mountain Watch, a group of volunteer activists in
Nanjing, China, desperately need your help. They are trying to stop a
5-star hotel from illegally being built in a pristine mountain forest.
Their efforts have led to personal threats, harassment, and to potential
job loss and financial hardship.

Meanwhile, logging on the mountain to clear forest away for the hotel
has already begun. Without government intervention, the area will be
destroyed within a few short months. Your emails can help turn the tide,
and to save one of China's most threatened cultural and natural heritage
sites from an irresponsible and destructive project.

Zijin Mountain, which means "Purple Gold Mountain" in Chinese, contains
a rich variety of rare plants and wildlife, as well as a significant
cultural heritage. The region is the burial site of both the first
emperor of the Ming Dynasty, Chu Yuan-chang, and the national father of
China, Dr. Sun Yat-sen. Former Chinese Prime Minister Zhou Enlai once
stated: "Zijin Mountain belongs to all of China, belongs to the whole
world--we could not cut even one tree on this mountain."

In 2004, Zijin Mountain was designated as a National Forest Park by the
Chinese government because of its ecological and cultural value. Despite
the fact that this designation prohibits development and logging in the
area, Huang Ma Real Estate Co. has begun to build a sprawling 5-star
hotel and related facilities. The local developer has ignored the
protected status of Zijin Mountain, bypassed the required Environmental
Impact Assessment and gone ahead with the project, despite the
catastrophic effects it will have on the forest and surrounding area.
