Dear Readers,

The World Bank/IFC is requesting comments on their environmental
guidelines for the tourism and hospitality sector, among others. It is
presently the public comment period for this review. Comment can be
made by going to http://www.ifc.org/EHSGuidelinesUpdate. It is possible
to make comment until September 30, 2006.

I note that there is quite a bit of activity at present in the NGO and
donor community looking at guidelines for various tourism sector
activities. I have received requests for information also on tourism
management of world heritage sites, community-based tourism successes
and for concession system successes in tourism - all posted I believe
on green-travel network. I am concerned that the opportunity to do
quality research that is based on a thorough collection of data,
establishment of samples based on knowledge of how many projects are
available to be reviewed, international review for the establishment of
criteria, and participatory processes continues to be limited.

This is not to say at all that this kind of research is not valuable,
and it is important to move this kind of research forward without
impossible limitations of time and budget - but nonetheless it needs to
be transparent, with good sample sizes, and have representative input,
with international review -- no?

Thoughts on this topic are welcome.
