AFRICA 2009
11th Regional Course on Conservation and Management of Immovable Cultural
Heritage

Dates: 13 July – 02 October 2009

Place: Mombasa, Kenya

Organisers
· AFRICA 2009 Programme
· Centre for Heritage Development in Africa (CHDA)
· National Museums of Kenya

Background
The AFRICA 2009 programme, launched in 1998, is aimed at improving conditions
for the conservation of immovable cultural property in Africa through better
integrating it into a sustainable development framework. Since its inception,
the programme has successfully implemented activities at both the regional and
site levels. The programme is organized with assistance from the Swedish
International Development Agency (SIDA), The National Heritage Board of Sweden,
the Ministries of Foreign Affairs of Norway, Finland, and Italy, the Unicom-WHC
and ICCROM.

Course aim
The aim of the course is to bring together a group of African heritage
professionals to build a greater awareness of the most important issues in the
area of conservation planning and management, especially as it relates to
African immovable heritage. This course is the last in the series of Africa2009
regional courses and aims at deepening the knowledge of the problems and
challenges faced by African heritage professionals and institutions in carrying
out conservation work in Africa.

Structure
The duration of the course is 12 weeks. It is divided into two main areas
dealing with policy and practice at the national level, and site planning and
management. A prominent feature of the course will be a hands-on management
planning exercise at a selected site in the Coast province of Kenya. Active
participation is expected throughout the course.

During the last week (28 Sept – 02 Oct), National Directors in charge of
conservation of immovable cultural heritage will be invited to take part in a
seminar to review the work of the participants during the course and share
information on heritage management issues in Africa. As this will be the last
Directors' seminar, signalling the close of the Programme, it will focus on the
achievements of the programme and any possible follow up to consolidate on its
gains.

Participants must be professionals (heritage managers, architects, planners,
archaeologists, environmentalists, conservators, etc) with a university degree,
