Travel publisher Rough Guides has published a new book: 'Clean Breaks 500 new ways to see the world'.
The fully illustrated book is co-authored by Richard Hammond (founder of www.greentraveller.co.uk) and Jeremy Smith, the former editor of The Ecologist magazine. The book is the result of over a decade of travel by the authors, researching holidays that have less of an impact on the environment and genuinely give something back to the destination, through conservation and/or supporting local economies. Wherever possible, information is given on how to travel by public transport to the starting point of all the experiences featured. There are also features on using eco labels, carbon offsetting, volunteering, travelling by cargo ship, and using social networking sites to stay with local people. Dan Linstead, Editor of Wanderlust magazine says: "The selection and presentation are inspired: this is a beguilingly simple, tactile compendium brimming with solid research and good writing." Clean Breaks was featured over the weekend in The Times and the Observer newspapers, and is due to feature on BBC Radio 4's flagship travel programme, Excess Baggage, later this month.
