Karkidaka Kanji
(Medicinal Porridge)
Kerala, flanked by the western ghats with its rich bio-diversity, is
the treasure trove of innumerable medicinal herbs. After the dust and
heat of summer, the onset of monsoon paves way for the lush greenery
of the tropical forests of western ghats which houses these
invaluable herbs that are at their peak of potency during the month of
July-August, which is the same as the holy month of Karkidakom.
The month of Karkidakom is when the monsoon is at its peak and casts
its shadow on the people of Kerala. There are many associations of
gloom in keeping with the dark grey of the skies when there is a
feeling that the heavens are coming down human in terror seeks
spiritual strength and sustenance. The great Hindu epic-the Ramayana
is reading every house hold.
It is for this purpose of sustenance that our ancients have made use
of these potential herbs and with their traditional wisdom of the old
adage "PREVENTION IS BETTER THAN CURE", concocted a great variety of
seasonal medicinal foods and potions - the most important being the
famous Karkidaka Kanji - a concoction of 40 herbs, cooked along with
staple rice and coconut.
These life enriching medicinal foods that were once part of our life
style is vanishing with the onslaught of the juggernaut of reason and
progress.
Now, Altermedia is trying to revive this glorious tradition once
again with all its age-old grandeur still in tact. We also want to
create an awareness among the masses, the importance and value of our
great wealth of biodiversity and in the process preserve and save our
depleting wealth-The gift of Nature.
We welcome all health conscious enthusiasts to join the tray and have
a slice of healthy living.
We will be supplying this Kanji or porridge in two ways.
1 As medicinal kit that can be cooked at home.
2.As cooked food which is served hot daily between 5.30PM-8.30PM.
