Kodiyeri calls on youth at hospital

KOZHIKODE: DIG (Kannur Range) V.Santharam has suspended Payyoli sub-inspector Joshi Jose and constable Mohammed from service, pending inquiry, in connection with the alleged torture of a youth, Kanjiramukku Thacholi Biju (23), in police custody.

Earlier, Rural SP T.M. Aboobakker had transferred the two policemen to DCRB, Vadakara. Mr. Biju is undergoing treatment at the Koilandi Government Hospital. CPI(M) deputy leader in the Assembly, Kodiyeri Balakrishnan, visited Mr. Biju at the hospital on Friday.

Meanwhile, the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) will organise a youth march to the residence of Chief Minister Oommen Chandy in Thiruvananthapuram on October 10 demanding an end to the "police excesses" of the Government. The rally will also demand that a special police team investigate the custodial death of Udayakumar under the direct supervision of the Director General of Prosecution. DYFI will also take out a march to the Payyoli police station in the district on October 8 demanding action against the policemen who tortured Biju, a DYFI worker.

DYFI State secretary A. Pradeepkumar told mediapersons here on Thursday that the police had taken Mr. Biju into custody citing a case of motorcycle theft.

"But Biju did not even know to ride a cycle. Even though the police took him to a hospital, they did not provide treatment," Mr. Pradeepkumar said.

Meanwhile, the Yuvajana Vedi has also decided to take out a march to Payyoli police station on Monday.
