The urban poor to march from New Delhi railway station (Ajmeri Gate) to Jantar Mantar
Dear all,
We, who met at the National Convention on Urban, Development Planning and Spaces for the Urban Poor on October 15-16 at Kharghar, New Mumbai, resolved to oppose the Urban Renewal Mission in its present form, funded by the World Bank. The infrastructure development, uprooting the poor, the unorganised, the dalits and minorities, the women and Urban Removal Mission which can be acceptable even when Urban India needs a face-lift. The shopping malls in place of the mills and housing localities look to us ugly, not beautiful. The globalisation, liberalisation era to be furthered by WTO, pushes this which needs to be challenged. The agriculture, livelihood of the rural and tribal population too.
We witness the suicides on one hand and migration on the other which denudes rural areas and increases the peripheral populations in the cities and metropolis. The development is being equated to the displacement. Land, water and forest, mineral and wildlife too is being exploited scams and scandals benefiting the rich and destitutionalising the poor. The Builder Politician- Bureaucrat nexus is making big money and capturing market for the real estate and unreal money.
The UPA government can and shouldn't support this and should not go back on the Common Minimum Program. The Planning Commission can consult the corporate and plan sectoral actions and allocations in their favour, 64 cities and 250000 crore in Mumbai alone can be pursued as agenda, neglecting the needy rural sector and the urban poor.
We, therefore, decide to march to Delhi from all states in large numbers, on December various organisations in Delhi and Shri V.P.Singh the Former PM who is committed to cause of justice for the urban poor, will be with us , in support We will challenge the Plans, the Planning Commission, the World Bank through a large gathering at Jantar Mantar.
Let us all reach and meet at New Delhi Railway station (Ajmer Gate) before 10.am on 9 December and march to Jantar Mantar.
