SCs, STs bodies plan agitation

Pioneer News Service/ Kochi 24/12/2005 http://dailypioneer.com/indexn12.asp?main_variable=KOCHI&file_name=KOCHI14%2Etxt&counter_img=14 Organisations of Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes in Kerala will hold meeting on January 14 to formulate agitation programmes in connection with the 'discrimination' shown to SC/ST students in minorities colleges in the Bill passed by Parliament the other day.

Addressing a Press conference, Rashtriya Maha Sabha general secretary M Geethanandan said here on Friday that with the implementation of the new legislation the entry through merit quota in 90 per cent of colleges in the State would become a problem.

"A clear definition of minorities is still eluding. Everyone knows that most of the institutions run in the name of minorities were taking unilateral decisions with the members of the minority have no say.

"Parliament might have opted for a national policy on minority status and could have averted such serious lapses. This decision has created further problems in the education of Dalits, tribals and other backward communities," he said.
