She alleges molestation; women also launch stir

IMPHAL: An 18-hour general strike has been called in Manipur by a Joint Action Committee (JAC) in protest against the detention and "torture" of a school teacher for 10 days on suspicion that she might have information about her insurgent-lover, who committed suicide on February 20 after killing four police commandos.

The protest was called in spite of a one-month strike ban by the underground organisation, Kanglei Yawol Kunna Lup, in view of the ongoing higher secondary and high school leaving certificate examinations.

After announcing the strike at a press conference here on Friday, members of the JAC, formed by civil organisations, marched towards the Assembly. The police arrested them.

The teacher, Maibam Naobi has been taken to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences here for a medical check-up.

It the Assembly, members said the issue might lead to another spell of agitation similar to what was seen after the alleged rape and killing of Thangjam Manorama.

The chief judicial magistrate of Thoubal district, however, released her unconditionally late on Thursday night.

Women have also started agitations demanding deterrent punishment to the police commandos who allegedly tortured her.

Talking to reporters on Thursday night, Ms. Naobi said that on February 21 she had gone to the house of her lover, Khundrakpam Ramesh, a sergeant of the proscribed People's Liberation Army. After the cremation of his body, the police raided the house and took her away. She alleged that she was molested as she was being taken in a jeep, besides being beaten up for information on insurgents. She demanded that she be medically examined.
