Police yet to arrest attackers of AGNI activist

Mumbai: Two days after AGNI activist James John was beaten up by a mob, led by Shiv Sainiks, the police have made no arrests in the case. John was attacked when he tried to stop two slumdwellers from stealing water from a BMC pipeline. John on Thursday alleged that the police had removed one of the charges of 'causing griev ous hurt with a weapon' which he had levelled against the accused in his FIR. John sustained injuries to his face and back in the attack.
"Despite lodging the complaint on Tuesday night, I was not given a signed copy of my FIR till Thursday,'' said John. "When I finally procured the copy, one of the charges had been erased from the document.'' Senior inspector Arvind Mahabdi denied the charge and said the accused would soon be arrested.
John said he was holding a meeting with five AGNI activists near Charansingh colony at Andheri (E) on Tuesday night to discuss the water crisis in the area. "We were on our way home after the meeting ended around 10 pm when we spotted two youths near a water pipe. They had removed the valves from the pipeline and had connected a hosepipe with which they were stealing water. We asked them to stop and said the area was facing an acute water shortage. By that time, one Ganesh Pujari arrived at the spot and threatened us.''
When the AGNI activists refused to leave, Pujari summoned about 20 people who started pelting stones and punching them. John and his colleague Ravi Nair were hurt. "Pujari is the driver of a former Sena corporator from the area,'' said John.
