"Convicts should be kept occupied"

UDHAGAMANDALAM: The report on prisons reform will be submitted to the State Government next week.

State Human Rights Commission Member Justice S. Sambandham, speaking to reporters here on Sunday, hoped the Government would consider suggestions given in the report favourably. Convicts should be kept occupied with jobs. A part of the daily wages earned by them should be sent to their families.

He said in accordance with the Supreme Court directives, sub-committees should be formed in all Human Rights Commissions.

They should be empowered to carry out surprise inspections of jails and sub-jails. Regarding his recent meeting with prisoners belonging to the Al-Umma in the Coimbatore jail, he said though many of the grievances expressed by them did not fall within the purview of the Commission, some were genuine. A report had been submitted to the Government.
