People shouldn't expect much from the WSF: Tariq Ali
By Khurrum Anis

KARACHI: Left wing commentator and staunch supporter of the peoples voice, Tariq Ali, said that people should not expect much from the World Social Forum (WSF) which was a place to exchange ideas instead.

Ali, while speaking to Daily Times on the sidelines of the WSF, said that the forum was a meeting place for people from around the country. "It should not mean change in any manner," he said. Ali said people came to such places to intermingle and to share opinions. "People meet and exchange ideas. This is the basic meaning," he said.

Palestinian party arrives: The Palestinian delegation, led by Jamal Juma, was also present at the opening ceremony. Juma said his delegation, which comprised a total of 13 people, was down by seven because of problems they faced at the Jordanian border.

"Initially we were 13 people, but only seven could come. Also only four people from our cultural group, Qandeel, could come here. We had a total of 10 people in it. The rest were not allowed by the Israelis," he said. Juma said the Israelis had stopped his bandwagon at the border because they had trouble, allowing some of the younger men leave. "They said that these boys had political backgrounds and they stopped them from leaving Palestine," he said. Those who could not come included Laila, Fakhrim, Yousef, Ahmed, Shadi and Samer.
