The position of women in Kerala has not improved in concurrence with women's progress in education and healthcare, according to a seminar on challenges on Women's Freedom and Security.

The family system here never gave the woman a chance to develop her own personality and individuality, the seminar observed.

"Women here are facing discrimination. Domestic violence has often been used as an acceptable mode to keep women under control," observed the seminar organised by V Samabasivan Foundation at the public library hall here on Tuesday.

The message of the verdicts on Suryanelli sex scandal and similar cases was that the Government or the judicial system would never arrest the real culprits in such cases anymore, a speaker at the seminar said.

The legal system and the Government were misusing powers to ensure that the miscreant went scot-free, Anweshi president K Ajitha said.

Only the middle people were brought before the law in many cases, he said.

In the Suryanelli case, the court and the Government were enacting a farce in front of the people, she said.

Virtually, the Government and the system have declared a war on its womenfolk as seen in the way cases of sexual exploitation against women are being handled in Kerala, she added.
