NEW DELHI : Amnesty International has urged the Union Government to ensure immediate supply of regular and sufficient piped drinking water to communities in Bhopal.

It said that the contaminated Carbide plant site had not yet been cleaned up, as a result of which toxic waste continued to pollute the environment and the water that surrounding communities relied on.

In an open letter to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Amnesty appealed to him to take immediate steps to ensure regular water supply for the domestic use of the affected communities in line with the Supreme Court order.

Concerned

Amnesty said it was also concerned about reports of the detention, on March 28 in New Delhi, of 300 protesters from Bhopal peacefully demonstrating in front of the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers pressing their demands.

Many of them were victims of the gas tragedy and had marched all the way from Bhopal.

It asked for a prompt, impartial, thorough and transparent inquiry into the police action.
