Eachara Warrier dead

Thrissur: T.V. Eachara Warrier, father of P. Rajan, an engineering student who disappeared during the Emergency, died at a private hospital here on Thursday. He was 85. Chronic bronchitis was the cause of death, according to K.K. Praveen, Mr. Warrier's physician.
Mr. Warrier was admitted to the hospital on April 8. His family members were near him when the end came at 5 a.m. on Thursday. The body was kept on the ground floor of Pentark Apartments at Shaktan Nagar for the public to pay homage.
Among those who paid their last respects included Speaker Therambil Ramakrishnan, Collector K.S. Premachandra Kurup and Mayor R. Bindu. The body was taken in the evening from Thrissur to Mr. Warrier's ancestral house at Thiruvullakavu in Cherpu for the funeral. Mr.Warrier's wife, Radha Warrier, died on March 3, 2000. He is survived by his daughters, Rama and Chandni.

The Leader of the Opposition V.S. Achuthanandan has termed "heartbreaking" the death of Echara Warrier.
In a condolence message, Mr. Achuthanandan said Echara Warrier had played a big part in the in the struggle against authoritarianism and was a strong ally of the Left movement in Kerala. Although the Left had a big part in the campaign to reach at the truth about the fate of Rajan and many others like him, it was Echara Warrier who was at the midst of all that. He had pursued the case through various courts to arrive at the truth.
Mr. Achuthanandan also recalled that Echara Warrier had made decisive interventions to prevent the Left allying with K. Karunakaran and his companions. The administration has still not given a satisfactory answer to the question as to what had happened to Rajan's body.
`Unfortunate incident'

Democratic Indira Congress (Karunakaran) leader K. Karunakaran on Thursday was visibly disturbed when he was asked to comment on T.V. Eachara Warrier, father of P. Rajan who disappeared during the Emergency.
Talking to mediapersons here, Mr. Karunakaran termed the incident during the Emergency "unfortunate." "But what is Eachara Warrier's importance? What is his contribution to the country? Is he the representative of any political party or movement? Is he a litterateur? Why haven't you bothered to find out the pain of a woman whose son was killed in the police station?" Mr. Karunakaran asked. The DIC(K) leader said he had won all the elections held after the Rajan case.
