Thiruvananthapuram: The city police are investigating 15 persons, including three clerics and an Excise Department guard, in connection with the rape of a minor Dalit girl.
The incidents, which occurred in 2002-2003 period, came to light after the girl, who is now 18, was rescued by the police from a bus stand in Alappuzha this month. The girl was reported missing by her mother on June 6, 2006. The Museum police had registered a case of `man missing' in this connection.
Early this week, the city police took custody of the girl from a rescue home in Alappuzha. The girl told the police that an Excise Department guard, who is related to her, had sexually exploited her. Later, she was raped at different times and locations by three "pastors" attached to a church in Kumarapuram. The girl has also named an abkari case accused hailing from Pettah, a music teacher living near General Hospital and a youth from Barton Hill colony as the other accused in the case.
An official said some of the accused persons had attempted to buy the girl's silence by promising her money, jobs and clothes. The Museum police have registered a case of rape under section 376 of the Indian Penal Code on the basis of the girl's statement.
The police submitted her statement before the First Class Judicial Magistrate. The Magistrate also spoke to the girl and asked whether the facts she had submitted were truly recorded by the police. City Police Commissioner Manoj Abraham is supervising the investigation. The police have detained two of the accused.
