Lecturers arrested for student suicide

Three lecturers at BJB College in Bubaneshwar were arrested on Thursday
after a 19-year old student blamed them for her death in a suicide note
last November.

Mishra, the final-year commerce student in her statement said the
lecturers gave her less marks because she did not take tuitions from
them, police said.
"The inquiry officer was convinced that
there's prima facie evidence against the three persons [lecturers],"
said Amitabh Thakur, the SP of Bhubaneshwar.
A re-evaluation of Mishra's papers showed she deserved at least 10 per cent more marks.
Coded papers
But the commerce lecturers - Ananga Mohapatra, Sahadev Swain and DP Patnaik denied the charge.
They
said it was not possible to single out a student because all papers are
coded and identifying a student from the paper is not possible.
"I
have evaluated the paper not knowing whose paper I am evaluating. It
was coded. The codes are with the Controller of Exams," said Ananga
Mohapatra.
Mishra's father, a teacher at a local veterinary
college hopes that those responsible for his daughter's death should be
punished.
"I only hope that I will get justice and they will definitely get the punishment," said PK Mishra.
The
arrest of the lecturers has sparked calls for a ban on tuitions. At the
same time many feel a teacher should not be punished for something as
subjective as evaluating answer papers.
