THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A tense situation prevailed in front of the mortuary of the Medical College Hospital late on Sunday night when the body of Rajesh, a headload worker who is said to have drowned in the Akkulam lake while trying to escape from the police, was brought there.

According to the local people at Kazhukummoodu, under the Medical College police station limits, Rajesh, 22, was among a group of 10 youth playing cards around 5.30 p.m. On seeing an approaching police patrol, the youth ran helter-skelter. Rajesh, along with two others jumped into the nearby lake. While the other two swam to safety, Rajesh drowned.

Local people told RDO Mohan Kumar that policemen threw stones at Rajesh when he was struggling in the water. Rajesh kept raising his hands to indicate that he did not know to swim, they alleged. It was only after Mr. Mohan Kumar promised that that there would be an inquiry into the incident that the crowd permitted the body to be taken inside the mortuary. A case has been registered against five persons in the group who were arrested and let off on bail.
