JOB TITLE:Coordinator, Students for Bhopal India.
ORGANIZATION SUMMARY:
The International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal (ICJB) is an international coalition of non-profit organizations and individuals working towards justice for the survivors of the survivors of the 1984 Union Carbide toxic gas leak in Bhopal, India. More than two decades post the disaster the members of the coalition continue to compel Union Carbide's current owner, the Dow Chemical Company, and the governments of US and India to clean up the poisons at the abandoned factory site in Bhopal and ensure adequate health care, safe drinking water, clean environment and proper rehabilitation for the survivors.
ICJB India is a coalition of groups and individuals based in India. The four main groups that are part of the coalition are Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Stationery Karmachari Sangh, Bhopal Gas Peedit Mahila Purush Sangharsh Morcha, Bhopal Group for Information and Action and Bhopal ki Aawaaz. ICJB India is responsible for organizing support for the Bhopal campaign from within India and pressurizing the state and central governments to fulfill the long standing demands of the Bhopal survivors. ICJB India also monitors Dow Chemical’s business plans in India and discourages/ defeats all collaboration or business deals of the company in India. It also pursues legal battles on behalf of the survivors.
Students for Bhopal is a member of ICJB that coordinates youth solidarity for the Bhopal campaign.

POSITION SUMMARY -- Purpose of the Position:
- Develop student support for the Bhopal campaign in India through systematic outreach to schools, students, and youth groups.
- Develop an effective structure to coordinate student work in India which facilitates leadership development, effective communication and collaboration, and evaluation and feedback from student volunteers.
- Create and implement a long-range strategic plan for the organization, including annual priorities, Bhopal student campaigns unique to the Indian context, and days of action.
- Facilitate communication and collaboration between active groups in India, bringing the Indian campaign within the ambit of Students for Bhopal and the larger Bhopal campaign.
- Provide advice and support to student volunteers as needed, and keep volunteers informed of relevant news from the Bhopal campaign and Students for Bhopal.
- Create and maintain campaign resources such as educational materials, a website, and email listserves.
- Coordinate urgent actions, special events and trainings, and other projects in support of the campaign.
- Facilitate media coverage and messaging.

- Self-directed, able to work independently and manage time efficiently. Effective at working closely with others and in teams.
- Ability to think strategically and plan accordingly.
- Proactive in getting direction and strategic opinions from survivors.
- Agreement with the objectives of the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal
- Willingness to travel frequently.
- The position will be based in Bhopal/ Delhi.
- Fluency in English and Hindi.
- Very strong written and verbal communication skills, and experience working with the media.
- Experience in logistics and event planning
- Computer literate - email savvy, web-hosting skills and basic MS office.
- A thorough understanding of the student mind-set, how Indian universities operate, and the academic/student calendar.
- Experience in student organizing or work experience with other organisation (minimum of1 year) desirable.
- Ability to manage and maintain extensive contacts and related databases
The scope of the position will include identifying and collaborating with students and student movements for political/social change within India; which will comprise extending support and solidarity to genuine youth issues and in turn extend the national Bhopal supporter base. This function in significant in terms of the solidarity it can attract but at the same time it should not compromise on the priorities of the campaign. The person also needs to remain abreast (through campaign listserves and websites) with the political situation in the country and keep track of all developments in the global corporate/political profile relevant to Dow and UCC. This is for the benefit of the media and strategy planning.
The impact of the position should be considerable on the campaign in terms of support it will garner over a period of time. Political lobbying would be an additional responsibility that might be conferred.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
The Coordinator will be a salaried employee of the International Campaign for Justice in Bhopal. The remuneration shall depend on the applicant’s requirements and experience or both.
