In his excellent book HOW TO WIN CAMPAIGNS, former Greenpeace
strategist Chris Rose argues that far too many environmental and social
change activists overlook the potential power of radio as an effective
tool for political education and mobilization. In the Environmental
Advocacy and Organizing Program at Antioch University New England, we
agree. As a result, we have worked hard over the last two years to
increase the number of progressive, alternative radio programs
available on our town's FM dial, from zero to over fifteen every
week-and with more programs on the way as our group of community
volunteers expands even further.

Now, I agree that we also need to restructure the dominant corporate
media system in the years ahead, and change the very undemocratic
policies of the Federal Communications Commission, but I'm still very
impressed when people increase the alternative voices on air in the
here and now--as my students, our faculty, and several community
volunteers have done in Keene, New Hampshire. We believe that what we
have accomplished here is possible in several hundreds of communities
across the country. To help encourage such efforts, we have compiled a
fairly comprehensive Internet guide of radio activist resources.
