Additional Director General of Police (Intelligence) Jacob Punnose said that custodial deaths in the State were not due to torture and that the State police force had committed no errors on its part in the eight reported custodial deaths during the last one month.

Addressing newspersons here on Monday, he said that there would be a probe into the death of persons who died when they jumped into the rivers while being chased by the police and stringent action would be taken against errant officials, if any were found guilty.

"The police force should rescue the people on these occasions. Avoiding arrest for bailable offences is under serious consideration of the department. The public need not ran away when they see the police," he added.

Jacob Punnose said that two sub-inspectors and seven constables were suspended following the allegation that two youth died at Tirur and Thrissur due to police torture.

It was confirmed that thirteen people had died and one was missing in related incidents during police action and none of these happened due to police torture or third degree methods, he added.

Two of them died when they were in police custody and the reason for their death was heart attack.

Jacob Punnose said that big mafias with a strong investment of 50,000 crores were working in the State and urged the police force to work with confidence to obstruct the criminals in the State and do their best to bust the gangs working in the State.

"The Police force will have to take effective measures to stop the activities of blade, sandal, sand and spirit mafias.

"A framework would be constituted with a code of conduct for police personnel and how they should behave in word and deed during their duty," he said
