Police commission soon: Chief Minister

PALAKKAD: Chief Minister V.S. Achuthanandan has urged the police to try to remove their bad image and ``regain the people-friendly image they once had.''

Accepting the salute at a passing-out parade at the KAP camp near here on Friday, the Chief Minister said ``the police force is not to terrorise people but to provide them peace and security. Though the police are trying to regain their lost image they have failed to regain it.''

The Chief Minister said that steps were being taken to form a police commission in the State.

The Government had ordered a judicial inquiry into recent custody deaths. The police could not be blamed for all the custody deaths. But the incidents had damaged the image of the force to a great extent. The effort of the Government and the Police Department was to get rid of the image and make the police people-friendly.

He said police stations should have reception counters where people could come and meet police officers to lodge their complaints and seek redressal of their grievances.
